I am currently house sitting for my mom. Her cat Happy is at least 15 years old that I know of (got her as a stray). She has been Indoors ever since and has dealt with kidney problems several times. Last week she woke up and saw little spots of urine with blood in it and knew her problem was back so she took her to the vet. He gave her albon suspension to give 2 cc once daily and also crush up some vitamin C in her food. She’s taken the medicine and eaten her food every day since…but this morning I awoke to the tiny puddles of urine with blood in it again. I gave her the albon and some food but she hasn’t touched it and has barely drank any water today. A few hours ago she went up to my mom’s closest where it’s cool and she goes a lot and has been laying in there. I brought water up to her and keep checking on her but don’t know if she’s drank any. She’s alert in the face/head just not really moving her body much and purrs when I’m in there.

I’m afraid something bad is going to happen. My mom is out of town for business so I can’t get a hold of her right now…and I know that if I did she would just sit and worry until she comes home tomorrow. Happy is all she’s had since I moved out. Do you have any advice at all for me? Are there ever relapses within a treatment for kidney infections? I know people will say take her to the vet but I’m not even sure what he could do for her right now. I’ve been researching all morning on the internet and thought I’d try asking this community before I do anything.

Thanks
The vet is my plan if she doesn’t get noticeably better in a couple hours. I just thought I’d try on here first. And she is on antibiotics.

male cat (unknown age, till recently a stray) has kidney problems- as the vet said-, his gums are also in terrible condition – i don’tt understand, they look "black".
Vet gave him medicine for one week treatment and after the week: either the treatment will save him or he will be put into sleep.

Is there anything else we can do for him?

Cat was recently picked up from the street by rescuers.

My 5 year old rescued male shih tzu has been miserable for about 2 months now with worsening symptoms. He’s got allergies and has been generally uncomfortable. He has very poor conformation up front (legs as crooked as my vet’s ever seen) and his back is way long (like a dachsund) so he is just setup perfectly for pain!

Let me preface the treatment plan by saying, I started the meds yesterday and I’m not kidding… he made it on his walk this morning for the first time in a month. Recently he would lay down after only 1/4 mile and I’d have to carry him home.

DRUGS:
Zyrtec 5 mg twice a day
Rimadyl 25 mg twice a day
Cosequin DS 1 capsule per day

He feels that the zyrtec is very, very safe and effective for treating allergies without drowsiness. As for the Rimadyl, I’m a bit more concerned about this drug given its assoc w/ kidney problems. He said we won’t use it long term but just for now to calm things down.

Opinions?
What should I watch for as reaction to Rimadyl?
Wow, such great answers already! Just as a side note. I also switched my baby to Canidae lamb & rice formula dry food just a few days ago. I am told this is a better food, so hopefully will help him. He is my angel!

My reflexology treatment threw up ‘ kidney problems, liver problems, breast problems, pancreatic problems ( beginnings of diabetes ), malfunctioning thyroid, heart problems. I am disgustingly healthy as of now. Could my therapist be right? Or is reflexology just another alternative therapy which is not tried and tested enough to be reliable?

I have a 90 yr old aunt under our care in assisted living. She is doing well, but doctors tell her that she will eventually have an option to go on dialysis if needed as her kidney function is failing. Breast cancer of 10 yrs ago returned, and she took 3 hormone shots that are once a month. All of a sudden, she just wants to be on meds that she has been on for the last 15 years meaning the blood pressure med and diabetes meds. The new doctors are changing things and she claims she does not feel well and she knows her body. Her body is telling her to stop these new treatments. What will happen if she keeps refusing the new meds and how long does kidney failure take. She is on Phosbo to rid the kidneys of phospherous and is no longer taking the b p med and lasix. She only takes the phosbo and I believe the medication for blood sugar, which is a pill. She is not on insulin. She also does not put in the drops for glaucoma. She self medicates. What is her prognosis and time?
