My 16 year old cat has had more than her share of UTI infections, she is spayed has been since 6 months old. I would think a cat in her / his lifetime would get only one, if any unirary infections. She has had it 2 or 3 times a year, except for this past year we got lucky but tonight, Whamo!! pools of blood on the floor, frequent trips to the litter box without peeing, depressed in pain and drinking allot of water. I know this has to be asscoiated with something else serious. A kidney stone? Cancer? Bladder ? I will be at the vet’s before they open and will ask for some tests to get to the root of this problem and cure her. I pray she can make it till then. She is now resting peacefully probably because she takes phenelbarbitol every 12 hours and that helps. So if you have a cat that had kidney problems or anything simular that can cause these symptoms, please tell me. It is now 3:13 am, USA time and I will be there at 7:45 am Thank you and God Bless you. She eats the best food.

My cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I had to maek the decision to pill him with methimazole or go ahead with I131 radioactive Iodine which is a cure however there are risks with both procedures. The risk with the I131 is your cat could go into acute renal failure if it has preexisting renal failure prior to the I131 injection-AND SOEMTIMES AFTER TREATMENT OF I131 THE KIDNEY FAILURE IS FOUND THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY HIDDEN. DO YOU THINK MY CAT HAD KIDNEY FAILURE PRIOR TO BEING DIAGNOSED WITH HYPERTHYOIDISM AND IT WAS BEING MASKED OR HIDDEN?

my cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in Nov 06. My cat was diagnosed with kidney disease & 75% kidney loss in Nov 07. I decided to pill him with medication to control but not cure his hyperthyroidism out of fear that if I had the I131 he would go into acute renal failure. There was no evidence suggesting that but I wanted to play it safe but having not gotten the cure may have caused him to die 2 years later instead of a cure of his hyperthroidism. Should i have gotten the I131 when he was first diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or do you think i made the right decision to pill him by allowing extra bllod flow to the kidneys which helps kidney function. But i feel really really guilty like i didnt make the right decison and have been cryign for 1 month straight. My cat dies 2 years later after being diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism on 12/29/08, and I balme myself becuse I think if i had gone ahead with the I131 he would still be here. The doctors dont know why he died. they just say he was severly dehyrdated, lethragic, anemic. I dont know if the hyperhtroidim killed him or kidney failure. I Ijust blame myself either way and will never forgive myself. I will never own another cat becuse I am not worthy or deserving of a cat. My cat was 16 1/2 when he died. I was giving him subq fluids under the skin for his dehydration and wellness can food 2 cans daily with hyperthyroid medicine. I hate myself!
I am an awful awful person. if my cat had another mom instead of me he probabaly would have lived longer. Im th eone who should be dead nt him. if i could die 4 him and he live I would do it becuse my life is meaningless & empty without him.

15 years old. spayed. domestic short hair

vet just found a heart murmur and kidney failure. he is doing a urine test and culture tomorrow to determine exactly how bad the kidney failure is, but he believes it is just starting and is mild and can be easily treated. this opinion is based on a blood test.

the only problem the cat has is constipation from the kidney failure dehydrating her.

i questioned the vet on treating her, because of her age and i thought kidney failure could not be treated. he said she is not too old and mild kidney failure can be easily treated, it could be several years before the kidney failure degrades to the point where she cant be helped.

she is active and happy.

i dont have a problem with treating a cat, if the treatment will give her several happy years, but im not going to keep her alive it she is not happy.

has anyone ever heard of kidney failure being treated?
wow, thanks every one. i always thought kidney failure could not be treated.

she has always been on a mostly canned food diet. i do leave a bowl of dry out all day.

i fed her the cheap, made in china stuff ,for most of her life, not realizing how bad it was. she now gets "instinct" brand. 95 % meat, no grains.

i will wait to see the results of the test and what vet recommends, but i already know, she will not tolerate injections, IV’s or even pills.
i got her when she was 8 months old, had just weaned her first litter, had many, many owners, and was abused. those scars are still with her, she is a great cat, unless she is in pain, then she hurts you. giving her injections, IV’s and pills all count as pain.

Cronic renal failure seems to be what he is headed for. I have been to many of the websites and paid hundreds of dollars in vet bills. I cannot afford a transpant for him. He has some blood in urine has been on antibiotics and is very thirsty. Seems to have no real pain yet. Sometimes he seems to have trouble urinating but his bladder is not distended.

I am now feeding him his dinners as a soup with warm water mixed in his wet cat food to increase his water intake. He likes this very much

Any info you have may help me so let your minds think outside the litterbox :)
