I was rushed to the hospital yesterday with agonizing pain in my lower back on the left side. The pain was so bad that it was making me throw up uncontrollably. The doctor’s gave me some meds and the pain went away for a nice while, but he said that I’d just have to let it pass.
Now..I have no idea what he really means. I mean, do I have to push it out, or is it just gonna come out when I go pee? They gave me a strainer to pee in, but it’s been over 24hrs and I just wanna now how to get rid of this thing! I’ve been drinking lotsa water and cranberry juice…
Oh, and I’m a girl so this is one more question for ladies: I was able to take the pain (sorta) for 3 hours without pills (cause I threw up the pills) is this worse or less painful than labor/giving birth?

I’ve had about 14 stones maybe (lost count I’ve had so many) and think I might have another one. My urine has been iced tea color dark and just recently more clear but still a little dark. I had a little pain on the right side of my back but nothing excrutiating like I’m used to dealing with kidney stone pain. I want to avoid paying a doctor just to tell me my urine is dark from not drinking enough fluids (I was pretty dehyrdated during the iced tea colored urine phase) or some other simple illness that I could have fixed on my own. Does anyone know a sure fire way of knowing you have a stone without waiting for the agonizing pain to kick in or checking your urine for blood with the naked eye (it’s easy to mistake blood in your urine when it just you haven’t been hydrating yourself enough)? I really want to avoid wasting my time and money if it’s just a small problem I can deal with myself

I woke up last friday in horrible pain and went to the E.R. and they told me is was just a muscle spasm. They gave me some muscle relaxers and sent me on my way. Monday rolls around and I am still in agonizing pain so I went to the doctor. She said that it had nothing to do with my back and that I have kidney stones. They want me to try and pass them first, so they have loaded me up on percocet and have me drinking a lot of water. How long do kidney stones usually take to pass? Even on drugs it still huts.

Can eating a lot of chocolate cause a kidney stone? I drink a lot of water and no dark soda but I have a horrible diet (candy, greasy food, junk food..) Can this be the reason I have one or is it something else? Also do they have anything that can break one up to help you pass it? I was in the hospital Monday morning and they told me I have a 6mm stone which I found out is about as big as they get, but they just told me I could have surgery or go home with pain meds. I chose to go home but now I think I’m going to end up back in the hospital with the same agonizing pain and have to have surgery anyway. What is the likelihood I will pass it on my own? It still hurts…not as bad, but getting worse again by the day. I wish they would have gave me more info when I was in there.
also I have no insurance, so a follow up with a urologist is not possible. I don’t have the amount of money they want up front.

So I am a 23 year old woman and am currently halfway through my Peace Corps service (meaning I have been here a little over a year and have just under a year left) I found out about 8 months ago that I have a very large number of kidney stones. I found myself in agonizing pain one morning and called my doctor and they came and got me and admitted me into a hospital overnight in the capital and then had me stay there and ran a bunch of tests for a week. Well, the ultrasound showed many many stones. However, they stopped hurting completely after about 2 days and I never passed anything (that I saw anyway – I suppose one may have broke up and passed unnoticed). They figure from th urinalysis that they are the calcium oxalate kind although they said they couldn’t be sure because I didnt pass a stone for them to analyze.
I had a follow-up ultrasound in April and they found either 10 or 12 (I forget now which) and then the ultrasound technician quit looking, said that was sufficient to prove they were still present, and sent me on my way. At that time my largest ones were about 7mm in diameter and I had several that were 5mm, 4mm, 3mm, etc… Well, that was the last I have heard about them… Obviously the Peace Corps is not going to pay for any sort of "unnecessary" procedure for me to get rid of them if they are not hurting me constantly or causing other problems but I feel kind of like a ticking time bomb. I know I have about a dozen (or more) little stones sitting in my kidneys (I have them in both) and I kind of question what my doctors back home would be suggesting at this point… I figure it is only a matter of time before one of them decides to move and I am once again in excruciating pain.
So, for my question: For any of you who are doctors or for any of you who are in or have been in my position, what are the normal recommendations at this point? My doctors have pretty much told me to drink at least 2 liters of water a day and avoid foods with high oxalate (which is virtually impossible where I am at because one of the main foods eaten here is tomatoes). That is all they have said though… Any help is welcome
