How many Kidney stones is abnormal?
My hsand is 29 and has had 20 kidney stones in the last 7 years. The doctor says they are calcium stones and he just needs to watch his diet. Is there something else that can be causing these? A medicial reason of some kind? What can we do so he can be pain free?

Basically, all kidney stones are abnormal. If one occurs, this is abnormal and 20 is very abnormal. Calcium stones are by far the most common type of stones and there can many conditions that predispose to this. Conditions that can predispose to calcium stones include: High calcium levels in the urine or blood, low citrate levels in the urine, and high oxalate levels in the urine (You probably don’t know what citrate or oxalate are, but don’t worry about it for now). These causes should be evaluated by his physician through various lab tests, because some of these require special treatment. In general, we recommend that all patients with recurrent calcium stones drink plenty of water (At least 2 liters daily). There are other treatment options depending on the results of the tests performed. Sometimes extra calcium supplementation is recommended to reduce stone formation or medications that lower the calcium level in the urine. If a cause for recurrent stones is determined then we try to treat that cause if we can. Sometimes we can’t figure out why someone is having recurrent stones, but there are still treatment options. So basically, your husband needs to discuss this with his doctor. I hope this helps.
even ONE stone is abnormal.
Kidney stones are usually dietary in nature. Your husband definitely needs to have a low-fat diet. he also needs to lower his intake of calcium, like cheeses, milk, and other dairy related products.
There MAY be a possibility of using ultrasound "blasts" to break up the stones and let them pass out of the kidneys. You can ask the doctor about this, but remember — those jagged little pieces of stones hurt a LOT worse coming out than they do staying in!!!!
I get them too and dont have the insurance to go to the hospital to get them blasted but I will tell you what works and you can get them from the health food store. One is called Stone Free made by Planetary Herbals, which is also good for gall stones. The other is called Hydrangea by Natures Way. From what I read it is the one herb that can break up kidney stones. I had one lodged in my bladder a year ago and after taking both of these for about a week I passed the stone in pieces, so I do know it works. I read that one way to help prevent them is to drink a lot of water to keep crystals flushed away and to prevent them from forming stones and I heard lemons and magnesium are also good for prevention. I hope this helps because I know from experience that these are painful.
