Kidney stones can be formed from uric acid. Animal protein breaks down to form uric acid so if you have suffered from these it is a good idea to eat less meat.

Kidney stones can also be formed from calcium oxalate. In this case it is best to avoid high oxalate foods such as spinach, chocolate, rhubarb and beets.

Drinking plain water and avoiding diuretics such as tea and coffee will flush out the kidneys and help prevent stones from forming.

Two liters of water per day while you have active kidney stone problems; 100 ounces per day if you have had a kidney stone in the past and do not want to make any more stones. Some stones are caused by your body making too much of a chemical and that needs to be taken care of with medications; but mostly they are formed due to dehydration.

I’ve had kidney stones for years. My doctor prescribes a solution called "Polycitra". But it’s just Citric acid and sodium citrate, a buffered citric acid solution. Drink anything with lots of citric acid in it. I drink Diet Mountain Dew, four cans a day. It contains citric acid and doesn’t contain phosphates. Kidney stones are either Uric acid, Oxalic Acid, or Calcium Phosphate. Citric acid with dissolve the last two in place.
