Do you have to push to get a kidney stone out? And is it more painful than birth?

I was rushed to the hospital yesterday with agonizing pain in my lower back on the left side. The pain was so bad that it was making me throw up uncontrollably. The doctor’s gave me some meds and the pain went away for a nice while, but he said that I’d just have to let it pass.

Now..I have no idea what he really means. I mean, do I have to push it out, or is it just gonna come out when I go pee? They gave me a strainer to pee in, but it’s been over 24hrs and I just wanna now how to get rid of this thing! I’ve been drinking lotsa water and cranberry juice…

Oh, and I’m a girl so this is one more question for ladies: I was able to take the pain (sorta) for 3 hours without pills (cause I threw up the pills) is this worse or less painful than labor/giving birth?

It should eventually pass on its own, no need to strain. The pain is often compared to childbirth, but it’s questionable as to which is worse….and you’ve got objects exiting different orifices.

Suffice to say, passing a stone is said to be VERY painful. If you can handle that, childbirth shouldn’t be anything to fear when that time comes…

keep having lots of water & juices, it would automatically wash off the stone.

it’s comparable to giving birth. It depends on how big the stone is, but most pass (especially in women because they have a larger urethra) within a week or two. Just keep drinking. And, if you’re vomiting the pain pills, you can take an over-the-counter dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) about 10 minutes before the pain medication which should help with the nausea or vomiting.

It’s always best, too, to take pain medication before the pain becomes too severe.
