What is the worst thing that can happen to someone with kidney stones?

My Dad said my brother had to go to the hospital during school today and they are running tests to see if he has kidney stones. He is only 12 and I am worried something really bad might happen to him. My Dad said he might have to get surgery.

Anyone who has had a kidney stone can tell you the worst thing is the pain.

Kidney stones are very unusual in a 12-year-old, so there may be something else he has.

Kidney stones, if properly treated, do not cause long-term problems or death. They do tend to recur. If not properly treated, there may be kidney damage in the long run. Since your brother is seeing a doctor, you don’t need to worry about this "worst thing."

Surgery is rarely done for kidney stones. Sometimes the kidney itself is full of a very big stone, but they prefer to zap it with ultrasound and break it into pieces. The stones that hurt are the ones that leave the kidney and move down the ureter and urethra. Since they are made of crystals, they have sharp edges that scrape and cause pain. If they get stuck and will not move down, the doctor may insert an instrument through the urethra to get to the stone.

If the test show that your brother has kidney stones, don’t worry about it.
