My wife is taking Vicodin for kidney stones and is 12 weeks pregnant, will this hurt the baby?

  1. Kcelleste, 26 May, 2010

You two need to talk to your doctor?

  2. Mr. Shpongadongle, 26 May, 2010

    It certainly could.

  3. Bad Ash, 26 May, 2010

It will harm the baby absolutely. Your child is going to come out retarded. Please slap her.

  4. LEMONS ARE COOL, 26 May, 2010

YES it will kill the baby if taken for over 3 weeks.

  5. jeligula, 26 May, 2010

In a word, yes! Have her talk to her OB/GYN about it. Worst case scenario: she passes a stone and delivers at the same time.

  6. Baby blondie, 26 May, 2010

Is it prescribed? Doctors give Vicodin to to pregnant women all the time. As long as she is taking correctly, She should be fine.

  7. Ashley, 26 May, 2010

Theres a possibility. The dr wouldn’t prescribe something that would hurt the baby.

  8. Lindsey, 26 May, 2010

don’t worry! as long as she doesn’t take them in excess (like more than prescribed) and she doesn’t take them the whole time she’s pregnant then it’s probably fine…does the dr that prescribed the vicodin for her know she’s pregnant? i’m sure if the dr knew she was pregnant then he/she wouldn’t prescribe that drug if it would hurt the baby! also don’t worry because i took vicodin during the first trimester because i had my wisdom teeth pulled and the baby wasn’t affected in the least!!! congrats daddy!

if the doctor knows she is pregnant and he/she has prescribed those to her i am sure its fine.

i know several people who got perscribed it throughout their pregnancy. their babies are fine. as long as she is taking them correctly, there should be a problem. Dr’s. wouldn’t intentionally hurt someones baby because of kidney stones, im sure.

  12. ladedamom, 26 May, 2010

Yes. Vicodin is one that most medical sources will tell you to stay away from because it can harm the developing baby. If she told the doctor she was pregnant and he put her on it anyway then the doctor is an idiot and should know the side effects of drugs better- especially on pregnant women.
Just because a doctor prescribes it doesn’t mean it’s safe. I had a doctor prescribe something at one point that was a huge no-no when we were going through fertility treatment several years ago. It was a drug that was clearly labelled "if pregnant or trying to become pregnant do not take" and the doctor knew we were in treatment for infertility at the time.

My doctor prescribed me Vicodin when I was 20 weeks pregnant for back pain.. his idea was for me to take on every 4-6 hours so I wouldn’t be in pain [I have a severe skeletal problem and will require back surgery once I give birth] I think that is retarded of him though. Obviously, he’s ok with it, and sees nothing wrong with letting me take it for 20 weeks, but I don’t feel with it.

So I would talk with your doctor about it, if she’s on it only to pass the stones.. I see nothing wrong with it, the only real problem is if she has to take it throughout her pregnancy.

  14. Daisy, 26 May, 2010

It shouldn’t..I was taking vicodin off and on for about 2-3 weeks but only 500 mg every 6 hours!! I would definitely just check with your doctor but I would worry too much! She’s pretty much out of her 1st trimester.

  15. med109, 26 May, 2010

i had kidney stones during my pregnancy, even had to have surgery for them during my pregnancy. The meds I took for my stones were morphine (much stronger than vicoden) oxycodone (again stronger than vicoden) and vicoden. I took these almost my entire pregnancy, because I had 4 stones at different times! My son was born very healthy!

Don’t be scaring this poor man. For those of you who say it will kill the baby, YOU are dead wrong. I am a nurse and vicodin is a Catergory C drug which means it has not been proven to be harmful nor safe. There is no mother out there willing to go through tests. I have talked with many doctors and they all say it is fine as long as it is taken in moderation (only as prescribed) and is not recommended in the third trimester because the baby could go through withdraw once he or she is born. That is not pretty. To see a newborn go through withdraw. But NO it will not harm the baby if taken as prescribed by the Doctor. Just be careful with it the last trimester to avoid withdraws to the baby

I would not take any any medication when pregnant without mentioning it to a doctor first.

  18. wisdom teeth removal Utah, 09 November, 2010

Yes, that could cause issues. You should always ask you doctor about taking anything while you are pregnant. Better to be safe than sorry.
