How do you get kidney stones? And How can you prevent them?

Everyone has minerals in their urine. The kidneys filter out the waste, it is sent to your bladder, and you urinate it out. However, it you haven’t been drinking much, the minerals that would usually be dissolved in the urine, become undissolved and stick together in clumps. These tiny clumps of minerals are called kidney stones.

You can help prevent them by drinking lots of liquids (minus tea) every day. As said above, filtering tap water is a good idea. We have a well, so our water is full of minerals, but we do filter it. The tendency to get kidney stones can be hereditary.

Kidney stones can cause terrible, rather sudden, pain. It is very distinctive pain, and if you’ve had one, you know almost immediately when you are having another one. Everyone I’ve talked to, from the people who have had them to ER nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals, say the pain is very similar to childbirth. This severe pain is caused when the stone passes from the kidney to the ureter (the tube from your kidney to your bladder) and gets the stuck. The sensitive ureter is stretched and scratched by the rough surface of the stone, and its contractions to expel it cause more pain. It is often treated with narcotics.

Note: This only applies to calcium-based kidney stones, which are, by far, the most common type. Other types usually point to a different problem. To find out what type you have, you give the stone to a urologist to analyze. (You have to pee through a strainer to catch the stone, so you know if you’ve passed it and you can have it analyzed.)

If it’s hereditary, it’s hard to know whether you will get them or not, but the odds are against you. Eating fatty foods and drinking could increase the chance, not just of kidney stones, but of many other things. Eating chocolote and sugary foods can be bad as well. You can try exercising, but asking your doctor can be the best thing you can do, you get some valuable information, and hopefully you can prevent kidney stones, it’s not a very pleasant condition.

Kidney stones are caused by an increase of calcium crystals in the urine. To avoid getting them, drink filtered to water, to avoid extra calcium ingestion from tap water, stop drinking carbonated beverages/sodas. The softer the water, the less kidney stone formation you’ll have. I have a friend who had kidney stones constantly til they installed a whole house water filtration unit. If you can’t do that, then get a Brita or Pur water pitcher for you to use. The water will taste better, too.
