What can I do for kidney stones?

I am only 8 weeks pregnant, and I went to the hospital two days ago for a UTI. I had them test, but it came back negative for all bladder infections of all types. I was stunned and they didn’t look any further into it, they just sent me home. It is throbbing and I have to pee all the time. It feels aa little dull compared to all the other kidney stones I have had, but this could be the only thing. What should I do?

WHen you are 8 weeks pregnant (well.. when you are pregnant in general, really) your growing uterus is pressing on your bladder, and can make you feeling like peeing more. Pregnant women are more prone to infections, and I would assume your hospital sent your urine off for culture to check for organisms (bugs).

If you’ve got a history of kidney stones, and this feels like stones, then you should drink more water and hope that it flushes away. If the pain persists, your doctor may arrange for a renal scan to look for signs of your ureters (part of your urinary tract) dilating more than usual. Doctors are unlikely to treat your stones with medication or ultrasound therapy whilst you are pregnant.

Saying that, with stones, the pain is usually sudden and intermittent, and very sore.

If your symptoms persist, ask your doctor to resend your urine sample for culture testing again – and make sure you collect urine from the FIRST pee you have in the morning – as it tends not to be too dilute (compared to a sample taken later in the day, when you might have drunk enough water to dilute it)
