Because not everyone has the "chance" of experiencing kidney stones. They do last more than 12 hours don’t they? Maybe in that case, it wouldn’t be practical to use a hospital bed for that long when the waiting time in most hospitals is already beyond belief. At least when a baby births, they know when it will be over.
Because for approx 12 hours we are screaming because of the pain, were hormonal and cranky, many have not slept for days!
