Ways for an inside cat to loose weight?
My 7 year-old cat weighs 16.4lbs. He is on a diet of Urinary-Tract formula only, he had to have an operation because of kidney stones. He has to eat urinary-tract formula so he does not get kidney infections. He is also a strictly inside cat. I have tried hiding the treats from my parents (they feed him way to many), but I think he has just started eating more food to compensate for this. Any ideas on how to make him loose weight.

He doesn’t have to nor should he be eating that junk. Your cat had the problem from improper food and has this weight problem from improper food, Feed appropriate food for the species and there won’t be these problems

Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s, constipation, and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockages
from dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?)
Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.

My vet suggested to me that I feed my cat more wet food instead of dry food to get my 20 lb cat to loose weight. We try to limit the cat on the dry food and feed her half a can of wet in the morning and the other half in the evening. There are cat foods that can be prescribed to your cat to loose weight (and you can buy it at a store like Petsmart) but you would need to go to the vet for that. There are also indoor formulas and such that you can try. And some cats are just FAT!
Cut his food levels down, to a bowl or to what your vet suggests. Tell your parents that the treats and overeating is dangerous for him, and it could severely damage the operations results. String, toys, or socks with catnip are wonderful toys, and cats can spend hours batting or biting a sock with catnip within it. If you need some more ideas, the vet would be a good person to call. On top of a few of the answers above, I would say to play with your cat. Does he like to play? Buy all different kinds of toys. In my experience the cats usually like that toy where it’s like you’re holding a wand, and there’s a string with a toy on the end. They lovvvvve that. Getting him more active will definitely help him lose a great deal of unnecessary weight. Also if you have the room, or can make the room get him some kind of kitty cat jungle gym type thing. Go to petco or another store geared toward pets [or even a pet magazine] and get them something they can be active with.
Don’t feed him any "human" food treats and definitely don’t allow anybody to feed him treats, including your parents, sorry. Limit his so called treats and if you have to, get a special cat food. Pay attention to him and play "games" with him every day. You could also consider getting a kitten, that would exercise him. I have a 12 yr. old cat and she was kind of heavy, I got a kitten that was 6 months old but they get along and still play, she lost 5 lb. Good luck!
If he eats dry food try putting a rock in the middle of his food dish (Not too big a one. One just big enough to get in his way a little). That will cause him to have to work to get his food. He will have to move the rock back and forth to eat and subsequently he will eat less. It also helps prevent eating too fast and then throwing up afterward. I’d be willing to bet that after he loses some weight he will get over the kidney problems too.
