The pain is when it travels from the kidney to the bladder. Once it reaches the bladder--there is no pain--at least from the stone. There is still some pain left from the trip to the bladder. It does not hurt a man any more or less than a woman. A man's penis can take a tube--catheter-- about the size at a child's finger. So the stone does not hurt coming from the bladder to the toilet. Yes--you need to hold the strainer--or have someone hold it for you and pee in the strainer. Good Luck to you father.
