Here is a link to a well-researched article written by a lay person: http://catfood.tribe.net/thread/8db33940-373d-4063-88e6-e57c0e1e5f29 I found that this article explained to me what I had been needing to know but could not get the information from the veterinarians.
Two things to do that may help you to avoid surgery, depending on how bad your cat’s condition is (if it is already very bad, there may not be time for this to work, and your choice may be surgery or putting to sleep): 1) Switch to a high quality canned food – such as Royal Canin (which has a line of prescription foods, which may be a good choice for your cat’s condition), Nature’s Balance, Felidae, Inova, Eagle Pack, and Wellness, among others. If you can buy the food at Walmart or in a grocery store, it is too low in quality. 2) Add water directly to the canned food and mix it in. Cats developed for desert survival, and so are meant to derive most of their water needs from the bodies of prey animals. So their thirst instinct is not well-developed, and can lead to mild, chronic dehydration, particularly if they are fed dry food. Yes, they will drink some water, but all too often it is not enough. Water is the main treatment for the kidney stones, bladder crystals.
more water in the diet.. and better food..
give your kitty 1 teaspoon of canned chicken and rice mush (not chunks) 2-4 times a day and add at least 1 tablespoon of water to the food to make a soup..
feed a dry food with LOW magnesium.. if you are in Canada, NUTRAM is the best..
NONE of the grocery store foods are any good.. and infact Science Diet is crappy food too..
you need to go to a good pet food store (like an independant store.. not chain.. or a pet health food store.. or even livestock feed store)
look for a food with NO filler (eg no "byproducts) and chicken meal or turkey meal as # 1 ingredient (not corn)…
yes the food costs more but its more nutrition so the cat will actually eat less.. and poop less too!
make sure the cat has FRESH water ALL THE TIME.. you need to dump and refresh the bowl 2 – 3 x daily.. use stainless steel bowl NOT plastic..
good luck with your kitty.. lots of water will help
well im sorry but if you dont have the money what else is there to do then put her to sleep….just wait a little while longer at least and see what happens
I am so sorry your cat is going through this. Keep him on his medications and please encourage him to drink more water. If you are feeding dry, try to transition him onto wet food. This is because wet food contains more moisture and since cats do not drink enough water, this will help him.
You need to ask your vet if there are any other option aside from surgery. Find out what kind of crystals he has and also if his kidney stones are dissolvable with medications.
You need to first deal with the crystals and stones because prolonging needed medical care will most likely harm him even further.
All the best.
you need Hill’s Science Diet c/d food for cats. my cat had this problem and meds made no difference. its quite painful. the special food breaks down the crystals and the urine flows freely. a urine test has to be made to see which type of crystals he has. you may want to see a different doctor if your current one has not suggested this food which is an easy fix for kitty’s need
No need top put the cat down, there are a few ways of treating this including dietary, speak to another vet about it if yours isn’t aware of it.
Lots of water and canned foods that are high in protein, and pain meds as the crystals may be irritating the urethra.
But if there is an actual blockage your cat will need surgery or it could die.
